Re-writing the Hall is a new programme of critical experimentation centred on the Oslo City Hall. It reactivates the building as a living archive, revisiting the visual narratives embedded in a structure conceived before the war and completed in its aftermath, which came to embody ideals of reconstruction, democracy, and collective identity in post-war Norway—while simultaneously defining the limits of who and what could be represented within that vision. Rather than remaining within a historical reading, the project seeks to generate new contemporary imaginaries rooted in the present, understanding that their formalization requires rethinking methodologies, temporalities, and modes of cultural production, as well as their forms of political feedback.
The research unfolds within a field of tension where the very foundations of contemporary democracy are called into question, particularly in relation to extractivist logics imposed on other territories, bodies, and communities excluded from dominant systems of representation, yet deeply interconnected through global capitalism. From within this complexity, the project articulates a critical re-reading of the past as a tool to activate new forms of thought and representation in the present.
Re-writing the Hall project is supported by Oslo Kommune.
As part of its new programme Re-writing the Hall, The Union establishes a curatorial research framework centred on the Oslo City Hall. This first edition brings together curators Claudia Rodríguez-Ponga Linares and Alexis Callado Estefanía in a research residency in Oslo, developed within the framework of the Spanish international mobility programme PICE (Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture).
